Topic: OLPC moves to MS Windows as predicted by MauroNewMedia

In our 2007 User Experience Design Review we posted a challenge to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) management team questioning their decision to create a totally new user interface for the OLPC system. Our point was that even though MS Windows is no paragon of usability, it is user training and learning transfer that is more important to the millions of children in 3rd world countries who are slated to use the OLPC machine. The challenge that we posted received a firestorm of criticism.

In the New York Times today is an article by Steven Lohr announcing that OLPC has adopted MS Windows as the interface for OLPC. Below is a link to a copy of our original 2007 User Experience Design Review which contains the OLPC challenge and a link to the NYT article.

This demonstrates that creating a powerful user experience is far more complex than most assume and that one must go beyond the obvious assumption that simply because a new user experience is innovative it also supports user needs effectively.
